New Business Startup FAQs
What should I set up before starting a business in Calgary?
Requirements depend on the business and may include business registration or incorporation, CRA accounts, GST where applicable, payroll where employees are paid, bookkeeping records, financial setup and applicable licences or permits. Calgary location approval should also be checked. Not every startup needs every account or licence.
Do I need to incorporate before starting a business?
No. A business may operate as a sole proprietorship, partnership or corporation, depending on the circumstances. KL can discuss accounting and tax considerations and assist with business incorporation where you choose or require a corporation.
When does a new business need to register for GST?
Most businesses must register when worldwide taxable revenues, including those of associates, exceed the $30,000 small-supplier threshold in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive calendar quarters. Registration timing differs depending on how the threshold is exceeded, and exceptions apply. Eligible businesses making taxable supplies may register voluntarily. See CRA registration guidance for the applicable rules.
When does a new business need a payroll account?
A payroll program account is generally needed when a business becomes an employer and must deduct and remit payroll amounts. CRA requires registration before the first remittance due date. KL can help coordinate the account and payroll setup for the engagement.
Can KL Accounting set up bookkeeping for a new business?
Yes. KL can help establish organized bookkeeping records from the beginning of operations and provide ongoing bookkeeping support based on the agreed scope.
Can KL Accounting help with WCB Alberta registration?
Where applicable, KL Accounting can assist with organizing the business and payroll information required for WCB Alberta registration and reporting. Coverage requirements depend on the business and industry; not every business requires the same coverage.
Can KL Accounting prepare a business plan for my startup?
Yes. KL prepares customized business plans supported by market research and financial projections, based on the purpose and scope of the engagement.
What financial records should I keep from day one?
Keep sales and income records, invoices, receipts, bank and credit-card records, and business-expense information. Payroll records and GST information may also be needed where applicable. Keeping business records organized from the start supports ongoing reporting and year-end work.
Can KL Accounting continue handling my accounting after the business launches?
Yes. Ongoing support may include bookkeeping, payroll, GST, accounting and corporate tax where applicable, depending on the services included in the engagement.
